Experienced Officer
To be consider an Experienced Police Constable, candidates must:
- be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada
- have successfully completed police constable recruit training at the Ontario Police College, RCMP Depot, or other accredited facility (Officers policing outside of the province of Ontario will be required to complete an OPC exemption exam at time of hire)
- have successfully completed the police constable probationary period at a recognized Canadian police service
In addition, to qualify as an Experienced Police Constable at Kingston Police, candidates must:
- not currently be the subject of any disciplinary proceedings or any internal or external complaint/investigative proceedings
- not have any current charges pending before the courts
- be physically and mentally able to perform the duties of the position
- have a valid G driver's licence
- have current Standard First Aid & CPR training
- be of good moral character
Step 1 involves completing the following 3 actions in our Application Portal:
- create a profile
- upload all required documents (see below)
- apply to the Experienced Police Constable job posting
Once you have completed the three actions above, you will receive an automated confirmation email. At this time, the Kingston Police hiring team will review your application and invite those selected to move forward in the process to interview. Only those selected for further consideration will be contacted.
Required documentation:
- cover letter and resume
- other training/educational certificates
- records of policing achievements
- valid G driver's licence
- current First Aid and CPR training
Supporting documentation that you may include:
- post secondary diploma/degree
- transcripts
- certificates/letters from community involvement
- any other relevant documents that you wish reviewed
Typically, there is one in-person interview for experienced officers.
If selected for interview and you are able to travel to Kingston:
- interview is scheduled with a two member panel of senior officers
If you are out of province or live several hours away:
- we offer a first interview online video option
- if successful with the first interview, a second interview is scheduled with a two member panel of senior officers in-person
If you are successful at the interview stage, you will move on to post-interview testing which includes:
- a Pre-Background Questionnaire (PBQ).
- psychological testing and interview with psychologist
- must complete in-house fitness test with Kingston Police
- third-party medical examination
Final stage of process
Comprehensive background investigation, including but not limited to:
- reference checks: personal, work and education
- police records checks
- driving records
- verification of employment history
- verification of educational documents
- credit history check
- home visit
Successful applicants are contacted and provided with an offer of employment. Starting dates are flexible and will be negotiated between the officer and Kingston Police.
Kingston Police will recognize your previous police service in regards to vacation time. A letter confirming your past employment will be required.
Officers new to Kingston Police will be sworn in at Kingston's historic Superior Court house where family and friends are welcome for this special occasion. Officers will have one week of in-house training including firearms re-qualification before being assigned to a platoon.
